MIDDLETOWN — Hockey may be the vehicle, but the message Jake Lakatos and the New Jersey 87’s are trying to drive home goes beyond the game they love.
On Sunday, Oct. 29 Lakatos and the Eastern Hockey League Premier affiliate will welcome a rival in the New York Apple Core to Middletown Ice World for a divisional tilt, but instead of donning the baby blues this newly minted 87’s club is accustomed too wearing, the organization and their home rink will be draped in pink…as the franchise joins the fight for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“My mother and I put this sort of game together back in 2010 [when Lakatos was with the New Jersey Jr. Titans] and it was very successful in raising funds and awareness for a cause that is really important to a lot of people,” Lakatos said.
And Lakatos is one of those people, as the Brick Township native saw his own grandmother battle against breast cancer, a fight that has inspired him to utilize his hockey platform to help create positive change.
“This has always been a subject that is important to me and my family, but it’s great to see that my teammates are excited about it too,” said Lakatos, who is also taking part in the October Saves Goalie Challenge, an national initiative using goaltenders’ saves to raise funds to fight cancer.
“I know they’re looking forward to wearing a really cool jersey on game night, but they also know how big this is for me. They understand how important this is, and they’ve been real supportive about it,” said Lakatos, who boasts an .891 save-percentage and a 2.98 goals-against average in five starts for the 87’s.
Doors open for this FREE event on Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. with an 8 p.m. puck drop scheduled.
The evening — which is sponsored by Raineri Jewelers, Total Fire Protection and East Coast Power & Gas — will include door prizes, a gift raffle and auction, a 50/50 drawing, a chuck-a-puck contest, commemorative souvenirs sales and more.
All proceeds from the event will benefit The AMI Foundation of Atlantic Medical Imaging.
ABOUT THE BENEFICIARY
The AMI Foundation is a charitable organization that is dedicated to enhancing the level of healthcare for community residents by collaborating with local community groups to support programs that address critical health needs. Since its inception in 2003, the Foundation has provided over $1,000,000 to various charitable organizations throughout South Jersey and Central Jersey.
The AMI Foundation mission is to identify and develop opportunities to enhance the quality of life and improve the level of healthcare for community residents through education and programs directed at these goals, as well as through financial support of other charitable organizations with compatible missions.
As one of the leading healthcare providers in the region, Atlantic Medical Imaging — through the AMI Foundation — provides free or low cost healthcare to community residents, and — in cooperation with the South Jersey Cancer Fund — provides free PET/CT exams to patients with no insurance, including free screening mammograms provided to women 40+ that have no insurance.
